Plane-polarized helicon waves

چکیده

By suitably adding rightand left-hand circularly polarized helicon waves in a cylinder, it is possible, in principle, to form linearly polarized modes, contrary to the notion that whistler waves must be circularly polarized. The plane-polarized component is accompanied by a left-hand circularly polarized component which vanishes on axis but becomes important at large radii. The field lines of these two components and the energy deposition profile are computed for an illustrative case.

Theory of Nonlinear s-Polarized Phonon-Polaritons in Multilayered Structures

A theory is presented for the dispersion relations of the nonlinear phonon-polaritons arising when phonons are coupled to the electromagnetic waves in multilayered structures of nonlinear materials. The calculations are applied to a multilayered structure consisting of a thin film surrounded by semi-infinite bounding media where each layer may have a frequency dependent dielectric function and ...

Helicon wave excitation with helical antennas

Components of the wave magnetic field in a helicon discharge have been measured with a single-turn, coaxial magnetic probe, Leftand right-handed helical antennas, as well as plane-polarized antennas, were used; and the results were compared with the field patterns computed for a nonuniform plasma. The results show that the right-hand circularly polarized mode is preferentially excited with all ...

Helicon waves in the magnetotail

[1] The helicon modes are studied in Earth’s magnetotail using the Harris sheet as a model of its equilibrium. The plasma sheet is divided into two regions: In region 1 both the electrons and the ions are treated as magnetized, whereas in region 2 the electrons are treated as magnetized but the ions are unmagnetized. The eigenmode equation for the low-frequency, parallel propagating right-hand ...

Geometry of magnetosonic shocks and plane-polarized waves: Coplanarity Variance Analysis (CVA)

[1] Minimum Variance Analysis (MVA) is frequently used for the geometrical organization of a time series of vectors. The Coplanarity Variance Analysis (CVA) developed in this paper reproduces the layer geometry involving coplanar magnetosonic shocks or plane-polarized wave trains (including normals and coplanarity directions) 300 times more precisely (<0.1 ) than MVA using the same input data. ...

Independent Controls of Differently-Polarized Reflected Waves by Anisotropic Metasurfaces

We propose a kind of anisotropic planar metasurface, which has capacity to manipulate the orthogonally-polarized electromagnetic waves independently in the reflection mode. The metasurface is composed of orthogonally I-shaped structures and a metal-grounded plane spaced by a dielectric isolator, with the thickness of about 1/15 wavelength. The normally incident linear-polarized waves will be to...
